What are Genital Warts?

It is imperative for us to have more knowledge of genital warts so that relevant steps can be taken if needed. The infected person won't feel any pain just their presence can be seen as flat or mushroom shapes appearance on the genitals of both men and women. They appear singular or in clusters on the genitals and then make their way to the anus and buttocks.

Genital warts are transmitted by skin to skin contact, especially during . So if one partner is infected with genital warts, there are more chances of the other one to contract it too. Caused by the human Palillomavirus, HPV, its more than 60 strains have been identified by the scientist. One third of the Human Palillomavirus types appears and lives only in the genital tissue. They are contagious. Within three months of an with the infected person, about two-third of people will notice warts appearing on their genitals. Some types of virus are of high risk as they cause cervical cancer and other genital cancers. Some of the types are the common skin warts.

Human Palillomavirus often attacks the body silently like the other sexually transmitted diseases. For a long time the symptoms won't be visible. The warts caused by virus usually appear as small and painless bumps, hard in nature. Cervix or the anal regions are the usual areas where women can get affected by the genital warts. In men, they come on tip, on the shaft, scrotum, and at anal region. Though rare but those who have done oral with any infected person, may sometimes find these warts in their mouth or throat.

The more common risk factors for contracting the disease are deficiency of immune system, smoking, and the unnatural habit of having with multiple partners.

Genital warts can be detected through a direct visual examination of the affected area. Sometimes a biopsy or a colposcopy will be advised. To perform a biopsy, little sample of the affected area is taken for microscopic examination. In a colposcopy, the doctor examines the vagina and cervix through a magnifying glass.

If the warts are left untreated, they may disappear or grow with a cauliflower-like appearance. Moreover, even if treated, the symptoms may vanish but still the warts can reappear at a later stage in some cases. There are several ways to treat genital warts by applying topical skin medications in form of solutions or cream, by laser treatment, freezing, or even in some cases surgery will become necessary. A drug is also injected directly into the recurring warts.

Though genital warts appear innocent, they may cause some serious disorders. The high risk type of warts can cause cervical cancer, anal cancer, vulvar cancer, and in rare case penile cancer. Genital warts diagnosed on pregnant women become enlarged during pregnancy and make urination difficult, and even make the delivery difficult. Even more dangerous is that some babies born to warts infected women develop warts in the throat that puts baby's life at risk. In such cases, repeated surgical procedures will be required to prevent airways' chocking. Such cases, however, are very rare. It is, therefore, necessary to deal with this problem as soon as it is discovered.

As preventive measures, contacts, including oral , must be avoided with the infected person. Though condom can offer some protection, they too are not 100% safe.
